English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is an ideal option for degree-seeking students. The program offers English language courses that are designed to prepare non-native speakers for a degree program at Broward College. The EAP program consists of fifteen courses in three main skill-areas: Grammar & Writing, Listening & Speaking, and Reading & Vocabulary.

EAP courses offer developmental credits (and in some cases elective credits) under a structured academic program geared towards preparing students for a degree. Since the EAP program focuses on developing academic-level proficiency, prospective students should have at least some basic understanding of English prior to enrolling in courses.

In this program you will:

  • Develop the academic language skills needed to succeed at the U.S. degree or post-graduate level.
  • Enhance academic reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, and vocabulary skills, and strategies necessary for success in college and university coursework.
  • Write and read a variety of scholarly materials and learn how to increase your ability to analyze and manage those materials.
  • Become accustomed to a U.S. academic environment, with the goal of transitioning into specific career goals.
  • Improve oral communication skills needed to communicate effectively with classmates and professional contacts in group discussions and oral presentations.
  • Pronounce standard American English for both production and comprehension purposes.

Steps to enroll:

  • Visit the Broward College website
  • Complete an online application for admission.
  • Submit official high school diploma and transcripts from colleges attended beyond high school
  • Pay an application fee of $35 (for U.S. citizens and permanent resident aliens).
  • Complete and submit the following documentation to the Admissions Office at any campus or Center: A completed Residency Affidavit and a minimum of two documents proving Florida residency (Supporting documentation determined by the Florida Legislature)
  • Make an appointment to take the ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) test for placement. 
  • Apply for financial aid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) - use school code 001500.

  • International students (F-1 visa) have different admissions requirements. Contact the International Student Services Office (ISSO) at ISSO@broward.edu or 954-201-7228 if interested in receiving an I-20 to apply for the F-1 student visa or to do a change of immigration status in the United States or if transferring the I-20 to Broward College. EAP Program and Placement Information

  • Degree-seeking students whose native/official language is not English and who do not meet the criteria for exemption from placement testing as described above in the Program Overview.
  • Students who earned a GED in Spanish
  • Students who have ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) placement test scores that are more than one year old and who have never registered for classes.
  • Students who have expired SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, Cambridge English Academic, iTEP Academic, or MET scores (two years after the test date)
  • Students who did not complete four years of high school in the State of Florida. 

  • The ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) and required placement essay are used to assess students’ English language skills for placement into appropriate EAP courses that will prepare them for the English language requirements of college-level courses.
  • The ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) and required placement essay may also be used to exempt students from EAP courses if students demonstrate proficiency by meeting minimum thresholds. Students who meet the thresholds will take a  for placement into appropriate courses.

  • By successfully completing their EAP coursework through level 4 (EAP04XX) and meeting minimum thresholds on the PERT Reading and Writing
  • By successfully completing EAP coursework through level 5 in Listening/Speaking (EAP0400C), Reading (EAP1520C), and level 6 in Grammar/Writing (EAP1640) 
  • By presenting official ACT or SAT scores that meet the minimum thresholds
  • By providing official documentation of an earned GED in English and meeting the minimum thresholds on a common placement test 
  • By providing official documentation of earned college-level coursework at a C level or better that demonstrates English proficiency

Students can take the LOEP at any Broward College Testing Center.

  • Students must have applied to the College and paid the non-refundable application fee prior to taking any placement tests, including the ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP).
  • The ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) is untimed, but students should plan for 2 ½ hours to complete testing.
  • Students must bring a valid government-issued identification card.

  • ​Students are entitled to retest no more than one time provided it is within 12 months of the original test date. A retesting fee will apply for any tests taken after the original placement. 
  • Students may be eligible for additional retesting within a 12 month period with a recommendation from an Associate Dean for EAP.
