Course Description: This course provides students technical skills necessary to service complex patient personal care and medical assisting issues including the implementation of selected portions of a specific care plan that may include rehabilitation services, bedside care, collection of laboratory specimens, phlebotomy, and EKG’s. Patient Care Technicians work alongside doctors, nurses, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers to oversee and monitor patients. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared to take the Patient Care Technician (CPCT/A) certification exam.

Course Description: This program prepares students to perform EKGs and includes information on the anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography, and stress testing. This comprehensive 50-hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the ASPT – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam and other National Certification Exams. Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands-on labs including an introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement, and other clinical practices.

Course Description: This combined billing and coding course offers the skills needed to perform complex coding and billing procedures. The course covers CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation, and Management), speciality fields (such as surgery, radiology, and laboratory), ICD-10 (Implementation and Guidelines), and basic claims processes for insurance reimbursement. Students will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals (CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS).

Broward UP courses and workshops aim to upskill and retool students for the workforce by providing both the technical and soft skills needed for college and career readiness. Course offerings span multiple career pathways and impart valuable skills that can be applied to numerous work settings. Certifications can be earned in as little as one day or up to several months online and right in your neighborhood. Explore the types of programs offered through Broward UP below.
Eligibility: Applicants must be 18 years of age or older for most Broward UP courses. For health care courses, applicants must also have completed a high school diploma or GED. If you have not completed a high school diploma or GED, we can assist you through our Adult Education program.
Funding: Through grant funding, Broward UP offers free courses and workshops to qualifying students who reside in the following zip codes: 33309, 33311, 33313, 33314, 33319, 33023, 33020, 33069, 33064, 33441, and 33065, and those referred by community partners. Certain restrictions apply.
Other internal and external funding opportunities may be available for eligible students outside of these areas. The Career Pathway Navigator team assists students with determining available opportunities.
